Letter Proposal Final Draft

Dear Bob Stanley,

Utah State University’s spirit club, the Hurd, and the student athletes are hosting the first annual service project called Meet the CHAlleNGE “home renovation” on April 10, 2010. This project is meant to take a home in the Cache Valley area and renovate it for a local family in need in one day. This project is incredibly time consuming and budget sensitive so therefore we are calling upon the people and businesses within the community. We are currently in need of supplies and resources to make three ramps for our family. We are asking you to help us accomplish or goal and to help make a positive CHANGE in one local families life forever.

Your company was referred to us by one of our lead sponsors, the Cache Valley Radio Group. They have the highest praise towards yourself and your charitable donations in the past and after looking into Cantwell Lumber, we as a university knew that your business was just what we were looking for on such short notice.

The benefit of joining our cause not only brings you positive public relations within the community and the university demographic but it also promotes your company in the form of tax deductions. Utah State University is a non-profit organization therefore, by donating to the Meet the Challenge “home renovation” project you would be eligible to deduct your donation off your taxes.

The Kent family has a small severely handicapped child named Dameon, in December 2008 he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus (water on the brain) and after many surgeries he was left with little brain function and in a wheel chair. This is why we need your help. The current home the family is moving into is located at 444 East 180 South Smithfield, UT it does not have any ramps for Daemon’s parents to move him in and out of the house. I have attached three (3) pictures to this letter. One of the front steps, one of the back steps, and one of the garage stairs. We have had professional contractors come and inspect the steps to see what supplies we need and I have also attached that list to this letter.

This project is new to the university however, as Utah State University students and student athletes we are highly skilled in the form of serving others and as the project I have been working for six months to make this project possible. We have numerous sponsors and skilled individuals donating their time and expertise to help us, as students, accomplish our goal and we are positive that this project will be a huge success.

On the Cantwell website and card it states, “building solutions and project support." This local family truly needs us to "build solutions" for them and we are hoping that your company is willing to contribute to our efforts by donating the supplies we need to build these three ramps and make a positive change in the Kent Family's life.

Please feel free to contact us anytime, contact information is indicated below. We will be following up with your company in the next two weeks. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Megan Darrington

JCOM 2160 Assignment #5

PHOTO #1

In this photo I used the magic wand for the green trim on the building and pike street sign, inversed the function then applied a warmer color filter to all of the picture other than the green. I created a copy of background and color burned the copy opacity about 40% then used the stamp function to add butterflies. After, I added vertical text with text tool compressed ad saved the picture.

PHOTO #2

In this photo I used the magnetic lasso to divide the picture in half. I applied warm photo filter to dock and wake houses, then applied cool color filter on the remaining portion of the picture. I then added Wrangell, Alaska text and added another picture of a whale as the top layer by lassoing the whale and deleting the background and made the opacity about 46% after which I compressed and saved the picture.

United Breaks Guitars

“The power of YouTube turns an obscure musician into a video star and corporate headache in less than a week,” stated socialmediantoday.com.

United Airlines picked the wrong customer to make unhappy. Dave Carroll a country singer and songwriter from Canada witnessed his $3500 Taylor guitar being tossed around and damaged by United Airlines, “crew men” during his flight to Chicago, IL. According to Carroll’s statement he then went through a year long process of people to try and receive compensation for his damaged guitar but in the end was given a firm “no” by a United Airlines official named Ms. Irlwig.

Since then Carroll has written and posted three videos on YouTube utilizing his talent for song writing to tell his story about United Airlines Customer Service. The first video released on July 6, 2009 according to recent numbers has been viewed over seven million times. The second video released on August 17, 2009 has been viewed by over eight hundred thousand viewers.

An official statement from Carroll was released a short time after the first video stating that he gave United Airlines a “fair warning” saying that, “he was an up and coming country music star and was about to write a series of songs about his negative experience with this company.”

Carroll also stated that he had been contacted by United Airlines Officials and was offered compensation for the guitar. Carroll graciously gave them a counter offer of donating the money to a charity of their choice. United Airlines then donated $3,000 to a charity that teaches underprivileged children to play music.

United Airlines made little to no effort to control the situation in social media outlets, which is a mistake. The only remnants of the companies response was on Twitter with a tweet from a United Airlines spokeswoman stating, “It is excellent and that is why we would like to use it for training purposes so everyone receives better service from us.” At least they are taking something good out of this video and making it into a positive spin for the internal perspective of the company.

Carroll was just an ordinary customer that was unhappy with the service that was given to him so therefore instead of sharing this story by word-of-mouth to his friends and family he decided to share it with the world. This is a great example of what Social Media has done to our society where anyone can have a voice, especially if it is in the form of a “catchy tune.”

Dave Carroll ‘s solo disc and this band, Son’s of Maxwell’s” eight albums have shown and increase in sales since his “United Airlines Breaks Guitars” video release. United Airlines has been rumored to have lost over three hundred million in which is ample enough evidence to state that Dave Carroll succeeded in his job to hurt United Airlines Reputation.

In my perspective, Dave Carroll and the very lucky charity organization score one point… United Airlines and their Public Relations staff are still at zero.

Letter to Cousin

Dear Cousin,

I hear that you are thinking of joining me in the ranks of Public Relations majors. I thought I would write and let you know what an amazing decision that would be if you decided to switch to the Public Relations.

In a nutshell Public Relations is meant to uphold and enhance a company’s public image and reputation. Public Relations professionals do this by being the “public face” of the client or company they are representing and also by writing positive stories and press releases for varies news stories and many other media outlets including social media which is literally taking over the world of communication in our generation.

One of the biggest questions asked by people outside the Public Relations major is, what is the difference between Public Relations and Marketing? I answer this question by telling them that I don’t see it as a difference between the two but a correlated effort. Public Relation supports Marketing by building a products and/or a company’s image. It also supports marketing by managing the crises that threaten their product and/or company.

Public Relations professionals can work in a variety of different fields including; media, community, and employee relations, also marketing communication, special events, and fundraising. Qualifications for being a Public Relations professional requires imagination, organization of people and planning ability, and also skill in face-to-face contact.

My biggest draw to the Public Relations major is the special events side of the profession. Public Relations professionals can work for a company to help promote goodwill among the organizations target market in the community by working with non-profit and philanthropic organizations.

I hope this answered all your questions about the Public Relations profession and major. And I also encourage you to switch, it is an absolutely amazing program that allows you to have so much flexibility and potential in any upcoming career.

Love Ya Tons,

Megan
